R-Type Delta (アール・タイプ デルタ Āru taipu deruta), is a shoot 'em up game released for the PlayStation in 1998. It was the first game in the R-Type series to be presented with polygon graphics. It also allows pilots to choose from three distinct ships. Although Irem's official storyline places it in the year 2164, the events of Delta begin in 2163 shortly after the events of R-Type. R-Type Delta marks a fundamental shift in the series with the additional of several changes which have persisted since.

Story[]

The following four paragraphs are quoted from the game manual:

1. Rest

It is the year 2163. The trans-dimensional fighter R-9A Arrowhead has returned from its mission to destroy the evil at the center of the Bydo Empire. Badly damaged, it has been rescued by the battle-cruiser Croque-Monsieur, and brought back to Earth's orbital space fortress, Aegis.

2. Observation

Astronomers in Central Asia watched as strange objects began to fall from the sky. As the objects approached closer to the Earth, they shrank in size and disappeared from sensors. The astronomers, assuming the objects to be meteorites, paid them no further attention.

3. Crisis

Before long, the electronically-controlled weapons systems in a number of cities went haywire and several abnormal heat signatures were detected by astronomers. Bydo influence caused control of the orbiting annihilation platform, Moritz-G, to be lost and it was subsequently unleashed upon the Earth.

4. Sortie

The Moritz-G descended on a city in Asia, its planet-destroying capability has not yet activated, but its self-defense system has thwarted all attempts to approach it. An emergency military operation has been put into effect, and the test fighter R-9A2 Delta has been assigned to the attack force.

The event of R-Type Delta is named the "Bydo Seed Incident" or "Satanic/Demonic Rhapsody". This mission also marks the first time where the Space Corps has accepted experimental fighters from different arms companies (the RX-10 Albatross and the R-13A Cerberus).

Unknown to people, the hero R-9A from the First Bydo Mission was already infected by the Bydo when rescued, and causes the infection of Moritz-G which was originally stored in the Aegis together with the rescued R-9A. During the investigation in the Aegis (Stage 4), Team Delta confronts the out-of-control QT Cat, and surprisingly finds that the rescued hero R-9A Arrowhead has been stored inside of the QT Cat. Unfortunately, the R-9A has already been infected by the Bydo, loses control and escapes. Then the Bydo alters the spirits of Team Delta's pilots and catches them in a strange dimensional rift where the familiar enemies and bosses from the First Bydo Mission return (Stage 5). After Team Delta manages to awake from the illusion, the Bydo attacks the R-Craft Research Center (Stage 6), and Team Delta is forced to destroy the tragic hero R-9A and two other infected R-Crafts at the Research Center.

In the final showdown (Stage 7), Team Delta is dragged into the Bydo Dimension and confronts the Bydo Core. The Bydo Core takes away Team Delta's Forces, but is eventually defeated by the Delta Weapon which charges inside the Bydo Core. The R-9A2 Delta and the RX-10 Albatross are able to escape from the Bydo Dimension via their trans-dimensional Wave Cannons, but unfortunately the R-13A Cerberus is unable to escape because its Lightning Wave Cannon doesn't have the ability to transfer the fighter out of the Bydo Dimension. The military never makes an announcement about the R-13A's loss. The R-13A is eventually infected by the Bydo and becomes the Forest Watchdog, and can be encountered later only if the RX-12 Cross The Rubicon is selected to clear the Battleship Raid stage in R-Type Final.

The story of Cosmic Cop is set to happen at the same time as R-Type Delta, depicting the urban armed police's effects to fight the Bydo with the R-11B Peace Maker.

Spacecraft[]

  1. R-9A2 Delta
  2. RX-10 Albatross
  3. R-13A Cerberus
  4. TP-2 POW Armor (secret)

Pilots are supported by TP-2 POW Armor for this mission. If certain conditions are completed (clearing the game on Human difficulty at least with any craft, or playing any stage for 100 times), the POW armor becomes available as a playable craft.
Interestingly, this entry changes a couple of fundamental aspects which have persisted since; R-Craft no longer instantly burst from contact with terrain (though Bydo bodies and other hazardous 'damage tiles' are still one-hit kills), which means that pilots can now hug surfaces without concern. Secondly, Speed Ups have been entirely replaced with pilot-controlled variable speeds. At any moment, the pilot can shift speed one degree between slow (Speed 1) and fast (Speed 4), a speed system borrowed wholesale from the Image Fight series. This greatly increases the tactical ability of a fighter by allowing them to adjust speed on the fly.

Armaments[]

R-Type Delta's contribution to the series is the Delta Weapon, a massive blast that affects every enemy in sight. This weapon requires charging, however, by the Force unit of the craft; it can't be triggered or charged without a Force. The Force gains a "Dose" charge upon contact with an enemy, which accumulates at a rapid pace. Once the Dose reaches 100%, the Force will emit a red flash, and red particles will hover around it. Once the attack is triggered, the Dose resets to 0% and must accumulate again. While the Dose meter is maxed out, defeated enemies score more points.
