The Space Corps needed another mainstream fighter to fill the ranks. Though other R-craft were more than capable of fulfilling most missions, only a few models were mass-produced. The R-9S Strike Bomber was a mass-produced model like the R-9A Arrowhead, meant to be a mainstay of the Space Corps' forces, but the Wave Cannon upgrade and its technological contribution overshadowed its own usage in the Bydo missions. Though it wasn't as popular as the previous models, its creation led to the powerful R-90 Ragnarok.

In Year 2167, during a Bydo invasion of the Solar System between R-Type II and R-Type III: The Third Lightning, all the R-9S fighters deployed at that time were destroyed despite their upgraded performance.
