The R-9A Arrowhead and subsequent ships were the forces that won the first Bydo war. The Space Corps, after developing the R-9 Custom, realized that they needed many more ships against the Bydo, and seeing a need for low-cost fighters, launched the project to produce this ship. With technology gleaned from the R-9 Custom, the R-9K series was started to produce a low-maintenance fighter with the same firepower as the previous warships. The R-9K went on to fulfill the role that the R-9A Arrowhead fulfilled earlier; that of a test bed craft, whose parts were often incorporated into other ships, such as the B-1D2 Bydo System Beta.
