Katakis was developed in 1987 by Rainbow Arts for the Commodore 64, and ported to the Amiga in 1988 by Factor 5. One year later, after controversy regarding the overwhelming similarities to R-Type, it was re-designed and re-named as Denaris. Several themes are copied straight from R-Type, including Force devices, and recognizable stage elements may also seem familiar. Katakis also borrows a bit from the Gradius series.
The titular Katakis was a planet controlled by humans. However, experiments in high-end artificial intelligence had rather typical results, and the machines grew self-aware to the point where they deemed humanity as unnecessary. After failed attacks with nuclear weapons, the humans developed the DS-H75 Eagle Fighter to destroy the machines.
